Main Ingredients

  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Signature SELECT® baking soda
  • 3 cups Signature SELECT® all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp. Signature SELECT® granulated white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Signature SELECT® table salt
  • 1 tablespoon O Organics® caraway seeds (optional
  • 1 stick (4 oz.) Open Nature® European style butter, cold, cut up into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 1 1/4 cups Lucerne® buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup currants or Signature SELECT® dark seedless raisins
  • 1 large Lucerne® egg (for brushing top)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Heat oven to 350°. Line bottom of baking sheet with parchment and grease with pan release spray.

Step 2

Combine baking powder, baking soda, flour, sugar, salt and caraway seeds in a large mixing bowl.

Step 3

Add butter cubes and cut into the dry ingredients with a pastry cutter until they are the size of small peas. Stir in currants or raisins and buttermilk; mix lightly with a wooden spoon until a dough just forms.

Step 4

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly and form into one 7” diameter round.

Step 5

Place on prepared baking sheet. In a small bowl, whisk the egg until combined; brush top with egg. Use a sharp knife to cut an 'X' into the top of the loaf.

Step 6

Place in oven and bake about 35 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center of the bread comes out clean.

Step 7

Cool on wire rack, cut and serve with Open Nature® European style butter and Signature SELECT® preserves of your choice.
