drawing of person The health and wellness of our employees is paramount at Safeway. In partnership with the Live Healthy America program, we piloted the Live Healthy Safeway 100 Day Wellness Challenge with great success. The 100 Day Wellness Challenge was a voluntary team-based weight loss and physical activity program that helped participants make positive changes toward a healthier lifestyle. In early 2010, we launched JumpStart, a voluntary nine-week wellness competition that focuses on teamwork and long-term success.

  • * 3,328 employees completed the program
  • * Employees lost a total of 19,368 pounds, or an average of 5.8 pounds per participant
  • * Participants realized an overall obesity reduction of 7%

In addition to making our corporate headquarters in Northern California and our corporate and division campuses across North America smoke-free as part of our comprehensive healthy workplace program, we have expanded our smoke-free initiative to include our retail locations.
To assist the efforts of those employees who wish to stop consuming tobacco products, Safeway offers a free eight-week cessation program.
The California Task Force on Youth and Workplace Wellness recently honored Safeway with the FIT Business Award. In doing so, they recognized our efforts to promote healthy eating and physical activity among our employees.
